Niche rose perfumes: 7 roses, 7 characters

Pure, musky, vanilla, incense or oud: seven niche rose perfumes, each with its own character, and their main notes.

Rose has a reputation to shake off. For many people it smells like bathroom soap or a forgotten bottle on a dressing table. In niche perfumery it's the opposite: rose turns fresh, musky, gourmand, smoky or woody. It works for anyone, and it changes completely depending on what surrounds it.

Here are seven niche roses, each with a different idea. The notes quoted are the ones on our perfume pages, nothing more.

Rose, straight up: Radical Rose

From Matière Première, Radical Rose (2019) does what its name says: our page lists a single note, rose. No fruit, no sugar listed to dress it up. The perfect pick if you want to know what a rose smells like when it's left to speak for itself. See Radical Rose.

Juicy and mossy: Rose Hubris

Rose Hubris, by Ex Nihilo, opens on lychee. The rose arrives in the heart, then the base brings patchouli, oakmoss and musk. The lychee makes it juicy, the moss gives it backbone. A modern, quietly chic rose that works very well every day. See Rose Hubris.

Clean rose: Rose Musk

Rose Musk, by Montale, starts on lemon and rose petals. The rose stays in the heart, then amber and white musk take over. It's soft, clean and bright, the kind of scent that smells like fresh skin with a rose on top. See Rose Musk.

Vanilla rose: Atomic Rose

Atomic Rose (2019), by Initio: our page lists three notes, bergamot, rose and vanilla. The bergamot lifts it, the vanilla rounds it off. It's a warmer, more sensual rose that wears beautifully at night. See Atomic Rose.

Sweet rose: Roses Vanille

Roses Vanille (2011), by Mancera, brings together lemon, rose, vanilla, sugar, white musk and cedar. It's the most gourmand of the selection, almost a rose pastry. If you love soft, comforting scents, this is the one. See Roses Vanille.

Smoky rose: Opus XII Rose Incense

From Amouage, Opus XII Rose Incense opens on elemi, incense and a black ink accord. The heart pairs Damask rose with more incense. The base blends myrrh, vanilla, cedar and sandalwood. A dark, resinous rose for autumn, winter and evenings out. See Opus XII Rose Incense.

Rose and oud: Oud Fool Roses

Oud Fool Roses, by Montale, opens on tangerine. The heart mixes Taif rose, oud and cashmere wood. The base settles on amber, musk and labdanum. It's the classic rose and oud pairing, intense and warm. Try it if the other evening roses feel too polite. See Oud Fool Roses.

Which one?

In short:

And remember: a rose doesn't smell the same on every skin. If you can, test before you choose. Then compare the shops on the perfume page before you buy.
