Niche iris perfumes: 7 irises, from powdery to woody
Powdery, fresh, spicy, gourmand or woody iris: seven niche perfumes built around iris, each with its own style, and their main notes.
Iris is the note that makes people say "that smells expensive". Powdery, a little cool, sometimes earthy, it brings to mind lipstick, clean cotton or skin right after a shower. Perfumers mostly use the root of the flower, and it is one of the most precious materials there is. No wonder niche houses love it.
The good news: iris does not always smell like your grandmother's face powder. Depending on what surrounds it, it turns fresh, spicy, gourmand or woody. Here are seven niche perfumes where iris plays a real part. The notes we mention are the ones on our product pages, nothing more.
Iris on its own: Velvet Iris
Essential Parfums keeps it simple with Velvet Iris: our page lists a single note, iris. It is the right place to start if you want to know what this material smells like with nothing to hide behind. If you like it, you will know iris is for you. See Velvet Iris.
Iris close to the skin: Molecule 01 + Iris
Escentric Molecules pairs iris with Iso E Super, a woody, transparent molecule that melts into the skin. The result is quiet and modern, almost invisible up close yet noticed by others. Perfect for the office, or for anyone who dislikes loud perfumes. See Molecule 01 + Iris.
Iris and tea: Gris Charnel
Gris Charnel (2019), by BDK Parfums, opens with fig, cardamom and black tea. Iris arrives in the heart with vetiver, then the base settles on sandalwood and tonka bean. It is a warm, lightly spiced iris, soft without being sweet, and it works for anyone. See Gris Charnel.
Iris in the forest: Gypsy Water
Gypsy Water (2008), by Byredo, starts with bergamot, lemon, pepper and juniper berry. The heart blends frankincense, pine and iris. The base brings amber, vanilla and sandalwood. Here iris is not in the spotlight: it softens a fresh, woody composition that feels like the outdoors. See Gypsy Water.
Iris with make-up on: Putain des Palaces
From Etat Libre d'Orange, Putain des Palaces opens with mandarin, ginger and raspberry. In the heart, iris meets rose and rice powder. The base lays down tonka bean, sandalwood and musk. This is the iris of make-up and dressing tables, playful and very powdery. The name raises a smile; the perfume is more elegant than it sounds. See Putain des Palaces.
Gourmand iris: Tonka Hysteria
Tonka Hysteria, by D'Orsay, is an extrait. It opens with mandarin, pink pepper, frankincense and cinnamon. The heart combines orris butter, iris resin and lily of the valley. The base blends tonka bean, benzoin and vanilla. It is the warmest and most gourmand pick here, made for autumn and evenings. See Tonka Hysteria.
Smart, woody iris: Reflection Man
Reflection Man (2007), by Amouage, opens with rosemary, pink pepper and petitgrain. The heart brings neroli, jasmine and iris. The base sets sandalwood, cedar, vetiver and patchouli. A clean, refined perfume where iris adds a powdery touch to the woods. Ideal if you want something elegant for every day. See Reflection Man.
